The Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Consistent with CHEA Recognition Standards, accreditation organizations must establish standards that require accredited programs ‘to provide consistent information about academic quality and student achievement and thus to foster continuing public awareness, confidence, and investment’ (Recognition of Accrediting Organizations: Policy and Procedures p.4). COAMFTE has established Accreditation Standards that require programs to report on student achievement. Additionally, COAMFTE collects Student Achievement data on graduation rates, exam pass rates, and licensure rates. Accredited programs are required to report Student Achievement Criteria data on an annual basis.
Accredited programs report Student Achievement Criteria data for each cohort in the program. A cohort is defined as the students who entered a program between a given time period (example: the students in the Fall 2005 – Spring 2006 Cohort, entered their respective programs between the Fall of 2005 and Spring of 2006). Please note that data below is based on the Version 11 Standards Student Achievement Criteria. The Version 12 Standards Student Achievement Criteria went into effect on January 1, 2016 and data related to this set of SAC will be posted in the coming months.
The Graduation Rate is the percentage of students who graduated.
The Graduation Rate is calculated by dividing the number of students who
have graduated from Cohort A by the number of students who entered in
National Exam Pass Rate
The National Exam Pass Rate is the percentage of students and
graduates who passed the National or State Equivalent Exam. The National
Exam Pass Rate is calculated by dividing the number of students and
graduates of Cohort A who passed the National or State Equivalent Exam
by the number of students and graduates of Cohort A that sat for the
National or State Equivalent Exam.
The Licensure Rate is the percentage of graduates who are licensed in
the field of Marriage and Family Therapy. The Licensure Rate is
calculated by dividing the number of graduates who are licensed in the
field of Marriage and Family Therapy of Cohort A by the total number of
graduates of Cohort A.

What are the benchmarks established by COAMFTE for the Version 11 Student Achievement Criteria?
Student Achievement Criteria I
The Commission requires that each program maintain an annual average pass rate of 70 percent for program students taking the exam required by the program's state or province to obtain licensure, such as the American Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board (AMFTRB) National Exam or equivalent State Exam. The pass rate is calculated by dividing the number of individuals passing the exam by the number of individuals taking the exam. Pass rates will be calculated on an annual basis taking into account those current students or graduates who have taken the exam and received their score in the current one year period. Programs located in a state or province that do not regulate the profession of Marriage and Family Therapy or that do not have a required exam are exempt from this requirement. The Commission will monitor these pass rates in each Annual Report and Self-Study submitted by the program.
Student Achievement Criteria II
The Commission requires that programs graduate 50 percent of enrolled students within the advertised length of completion of the program. The Commission requires that programs graduate 65 percent of enrolled students within the maximum allowable time for program completion.
When is a program being held to the requirements of the benchmarks for Student Achievement Criteria?
Accredited programs are held to the Student Achievement Criteria requirements beginning with the date of program's Initial Accreditation status, if the program was accredited after 2005. Programs accredited prior to 2005, will be held to the Student Achievement Criteria requirements beginning with the students who entered the program between the Fall 2005-Spring 2006.
Can the Student Achievement Criteria be used as a guide for selecting an MFT program?
COAMFTE does not rank programs. All accredited programs have substantially met the COAMFTE Accreditation Standards (Please review COAMFTE Accreditation Standards).
