COAMFTE Notice of Actions

The Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) reviews programs in marriage and family therapy at a masters, doctoral and post-doctoral degree level for compliance with the current COAMFTE Accreditation Standards and votes to take one of the actions described below:

Award Accreditation: Program demonstrated substantial compliance with all standards.

Award Accreditation with Stipulations: Program is awarded accreditation and must correct stipulations according to the Corrective Action Policy. (See Decision Letter(s) below)

What does it mean when a program is Awarded Accreditation with Stipulations?.
A program with deficiencies may be awarded accreditation with stipulations provided they can be corrected within a specified period of time. If the COAMFTE accreditation decision is to Award Accreditation with Stipulations, then COAMFTE will specify the "stipulations" that must be addressed in an interim report, or by an interim site visit to be conducted at a time determined by COAMFTE within the Timeline for Corrective Actions in the Corrective Actions Policy (COAMFTE Accreditation Manual: Policies and Procedures, p. 24-25.) According to the Timeline for Corrective Action, programs must clear all stipulations within two (2) years of receiving them.

Probation of Accreditation: Program has not addressed their stipulations in the specified time and must address the deficiencies within one year and host a focused site visit. (See Decision Letter(s) below)

What does it mean to be continued in accreditation and placed on Probation within the Corrective Action policy? Programs that fail to clear stipulations in their first year of carrying stipulations will be placed on probation for a period of time not to exceed one year. During the probation, programs must:

  • Submit a compliance report addressing deficiencies by the noted deadline
  • Host a focused site visit scheduled by COAMFTE at the expense to the program
  • Submit a Response to Site Visit Report

Revocation of Accreditation: Program has not maintained compliance with the accreditation requirements of the standards or violates COAMFTE policies and procedures. (See Decision Letter(s) below)

What does it mean if the program is denied accreditation or if their accreditation is revoked? As stated in the COAMFTE Accreditation Manual: Policies and Procedures, p.24, denial of accreditation indicates that a program does not meet accreditation standards. A program denied initial accreditation or renewal of accreditation, or a program whose accreditation has been revoked, must wait one (1) year before reapplying. The Commission may revoke a program's accreditation at any time if:

  • the program fails to demonstrate that it has maintained compliance with the standards for accreditation, or
  • the program violates Commission policies and procedures for provision of required information, or
  • the program fails to pay fees after adequate notice.

2024 Spring COAMFTE Meeting

COAMFTE will specify "stipulations" that must be addressed in an interim report, due at a time determined by COAMFTE, or by an interim site visit to be conducted at a time determined by COAMFTE (p. 20).

2020 Spring COAMFTE Meeting


The Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) meets biannually to review programs in marriage and family therapy at a masters, doctoral and post-doctoral degree level for compliance with the current COAMFTE Accreditation Standards.

 

As stated in the COAMFTE Accreditation Manual: Policies and Procedures :

The Commission will award initial accreditation or renewal of accreditation to programs evidencing substantial compliance with accreditation standards. Initial accreditation shall be granted for a period not to exceed six (6) years. Renewal of accreditation shall be granted for a period not to exceed seven (7) years (Shorter periods of accreditation may be awarded at the discretion of the Commission).

A program with deficiencies may be awarded accreditation with stipulations provided they can be corrected within a specified period of time. COAMFTE will specify "stipulations" that must be addressed in an interim report, due at a time determined by COAMFTE, or by an interim site visit to be conducted at a time determined by COAMFTE (p. 20).
